Govt looks into commercial potential of Batanes’ ‘anti-cancer’ berries

MANILA – The Bureau of Agricultural Research is taking the battle against cancer up north as the agency looks into the health potential of the Arius, a fruit-bearing tree that is endemic in the Philippines’ northernmost province of Batanes.

In a statement, Nicomedes Eleazar, BAR director, said the agency, under its Technology Commercialization Program, released P1 million out of a P1.65 million allocation for the Batanes State College to look into the medicinal properties of the Arius fruit, which is believed to contain flavonoids and tannins.

Food supplies finally arrive in Batanes

BASCO, Batanes, Philippines – The airlift of food supplies to this far-flung province of 13,000 residents started yesterday, with the arrival of 10,000 kilos of relief goods from Manila.

Residents have been without basic commodities for more than a month, as the province has run out of commercial rice, sugar, bakery products and other food supplies.

Inclement weather brought about by the series of typhoons, east monsoon and west monsoon, prevented cargo ships to regularly transport valuable cargoes from Manila and other parts of Luzon.
